What is an opening balance?

Opening balance

An opening balance is the starting balance of an account when financial records are first created or imported into a system. Accurate opening balances help ensure reports, reconciliations, and account balances remain correct going forward.

Example: A business migrating to new accounting software imports its bank account balance as the opening balance on the migration date.
