What is black box AI?

Black box AI

Black box AI refers to an AI system whose internal decision-making process is difficult or impossible for users to understand or trace.

Users can see the information that goes into the system and the result that comes out, but they cannot easily determine how the AI arrived at that result. This is common with complex deep learning models, where the calculations and relationships used to produce an output can be difficult to interpret.

In accounting, black box AI can create challenges because accountants need to evaluate financial results, verify their accuracy, and stand behind the work. An AI-generated result without supporting evidence or an audit trail may not provide enough transparency for those responsibilities.

Example: An AI system recommends a category for a transaction but provides no supporting financial data, accounting context, or evidence for the recommendation. The accountant can see the result but has limited information for evaluating why the system produced it.
