What is encoded expertise?

Encoded expertise

Encoded expertise is a firm's accounting knowledge, standards, and judgment learned by an AI-native accounting system so they can be applied consistently across the firm.

Every accounting firm develops its own knowledge over time, including accounting policies, industry expertise, quality standards, recurring judgment calls, and conventions for how specific situations should be handled. Traditionally, much of this knowledge lives in employees' heads, review notes, workpapers, and internal documentation.

In an AI-native accounting system, the firm's accounting history and previous decisions can become context for future work. As the system learns how the firm handles different accounting situations, that expertise becomes part of the intelligence it can draw on across clients. This helps preserve institutional knowledge and apply firm standards more consistently.

Example: An accounting firm specializing in construction consistently handles certain transactions according to its established accounting standards. As the system learns from the firm's previous accounting decisions, it can use those patterns as context when similar situations appear for other clients.
