What is accounting ground truth?
Accounting ground truth
Accounting ground truth is the reference answer or expected result used to determine whether an accounting system or AI model produced the correct result.
When evaluating AI on an accounting task, the expected result needs to be established before the model's output can be scored. That ground truth should follow a defined methodology and, when accounting judgment is involved, be reviewed by qualified accounting professionals.
The quality of the ground truth directly affects the usefulness of a benchmark. An accuracy score is only meaningful when the ground truth is credible, consistently established, and appropriate for the accounting task being tested.
Example: In a transaction categorization benchmark, each transaction has an expected accounting category that serves as the ground truth. A model's answer is compared with that category to determine whether its response is correct.
