What is an audit trail?

Audit trail

An audit trail is a chronological record showing how financial information was created, modified, approved, and reported. Audit trails help make accounting activity transparent, traceable, and verifiable.

Example: An auditor reviews the history of a transaction to see who entered it, when it was modified, and who approved the final version.
