What is accounting context?

Accounting context

Accounting context is the information surrounding a transaction or accounting decision that helps determine the appropriate accounting treatment.

This context can include the business and industry, vendor or customer identity, transaction history, source account, Chart of Accounts, previous accounting treatment, supporting documents, and firm-specific standards.

Accounting context matters because transactions that look similar on the surface may require different treatment depending on the business and its history. For accounting AI, understanding the transaction description alone is not always enough. The system also needs the business-specific context an accountant would consider when making the same decision.

Example: Two businesses each have a $500 transaction from the same retailer. One purchased office supplies, while the other purchased inventory for resale. The transaction description and amount may look similar, but the accounting context leads to different treatment.
